Aims and scopes of Journal Lekársky Obzor
Lekársky obzor (Medical Horizon) Journal (ISSN 0457-4214) was launched in 1951 and is a peer-reviewed Slovak journal published by Slovak Medical University, Bratislava, Slovakia. It is a multidisciplinary journal and provides current information for clinical research in the field of medicine. Lekársky obzor (Medical Horizon) publishes peer-reviewed articles including original medical research (laboratory, clinical), review articles, case reports, editorials, mini-atlas and news in medicine. Original papers introduce scientific elaboration on the issues that are being studied, they are divided into segments and always feature a structured summary. Review articles are on-point summaries of various topics. Case reports feature descriptions of extraordinary cases of various diseases. Editorials are comments by selected experts in any given field. Mini-atlas contains pictures of interesting cases from the field of medicine. News in medicine map current affairs and interesting facts. Topics cover all aspects of internal medicine, general surgery, trauma surgery, orthopedics, gynecology and obstetrics. Journal is published 12 times a year predominantly in the Slovak language and indexed in SCOPUS.
A brief summary of the Lekársky obzor (Med Horizon) journal
The journal has been published without a single interruption since 1951. It has been meeting all the standards of modern science journals since its establishment and with substantial success. It features manuscripts written in Slovak, Czech, English with abstracts in English. Every issue is available in printed form in our editorial office and also in every library that receives mandatory copies, as well as in the University Library of the Comenius University, the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University and the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak Medical University. Physicians and medics have free access to every published article within the framework of lifelong learning. Full texts are available in “live form” on www.herba.sk. The access is free of charge. We are included in the Scopus world database. In the course of the last ten years, we have published more than 1 000 manuscripts by local and foreign authors. The evaluation of our journal is available at the Lek obz (Med Horizon) “address” of Scopus. This source also offers citation evaluations (SCI).
Before the onset of the digital era, our journal had been part of an exchange programme provided by library services and traded for various foreign magazines from all over the world. Nowadays, the electronic version is available to anyone around the globe. For the most part, the journal offers clinical studies and survey publications examining current medical issues, as well as the case reports of specific and usually rare clinical cases. The educational project also offers a so-called autodidactic test for the readers, useful for testing the amount of knowledge gained from each issue of the journal and providing credits for lifelong learning. Thanks to the aspects mentioned above, the journal paints a clear picture of disease development and the progress of scientific research in the biological and medicinal field, putting Slovakia on the map of Europe and the world. With such a wide variety of interests and interrupted history of publication, Lekársky obzor is the only one of its kind in the region.
Despite many significant changes to society, the magazine managed to retain its level of competence and educational purpose from early on. Its continuity remained unbroken, and in the years to come, it will offer a valuable source for comparisons and analyses of disorders of the human body that had been documented in the era without antibiotics or local anesthesia, a period that provided opportunities for augmenting only the symptoms of the disease without the possibility of causal treatment. The magazine’s uniqueness also lies in painting the perfect picture of everything related to medicine in the past.
Apart from providing competent information, the journal also chronicles the development of medical literature. We find the value and necessity of our magazine even in the fact that it continues to succeed in capturing the advancement of Central European medicine. Social changes permeate specific issues as they had been forcefully incorporated into the journal. Since the beginning, Lekársky obzor has been meeting the criteria assigned to modern scientific journals. In our opinion, the editorial office and Editor in Chief are succeeding in achieving even the highest goals that many specialized and scientific magazines are striving for. The ambition of the editorial office is to have the magazine listed as part of the “Cultural Heritage of Slovakia.” We are convinced that a listing of this kind would constitute a recognition and preservation of the results of scientific research and observation, proving its status of high-level and continuous intellectual endeavor for future generations.
