SUMMARY
Hallux valgus is a relatively common health condition for which a patient visits an orthopaedic clinic. If the deformity is painful, we proceed to surgical treatment. It is not recommended to treat hallux valgus surgically solely for cosmetic reasons.

Great number of surgical techniques are described for treatment of hallux valgus. Some surgical procedures are used more frequently, these are becoming standard for operative treatment worldwide. Different surgical procedures are no longer performed at all.
Depending upon the degree of the deformity, degree of first ray joint arthrosis and associate deformities of the forefoot, we decide for appropriate surgical technique. Universal surgical procedure for all degrees of deformities in hallux valgus does not exist. It is important to follow the indication criteria for each type of surgery. This work aims to suggest an algorithm for the surgical treatment of hallux valgus.
Key words: hallux valgus, basal osteotomy, diaphyseal osteotomy, distal osteotomy.
