Dlhodobá starostlivosť je relatívne uzavretý systém zdravotných a sociálnych služieb a podpôr. Otázky dlhodobej starostlivosti sú veľmi dôležitými otázkami zdravotnej a sociálnej agendy.
Pomaly sa dostávajú aj do pozornosti rozvojových krajín. Dôvodom je fakt, že verejné výdavky na dlhodobú starostlivosť sa stále zvyšujú nielen kvôli rastúcim potrebám, ale aj viaka permanentnému tlaku na zvyšovanie kvality poskytovaných služieb.
Pre každodenný život občana je možno dôležitejšia úroveo vnútornej integrovanosti jednotlivých zložiek systému. Vyššia miera integrovanej starostlivosti by mala posilniť kvalitu starostlivosti, a tým aj kvalitu života. Takáto starostlivosť môže zlepšiť účinnosť systému pre klientov, ktorých komplexné problémy vstupujú do mnohých systémov a vyžadujú viacerých poskytovateľov služieb. Dánsko, Nemecko, Holandsko a Švédsko majú alebo rozvíjajú najintegrovanejšie systémy dlhodobej starostlivosti.

SUMMARY
Long-term care is a relatively closed system of health and social services and supportive activities. The issues of long-term care are in the foreground of other important issues of health and social agenda. They are becoming the focus of attention in developing countries, as well. One of the reasons why this is so, is the fact that public sources for long-term care
constantly grow not only due to the increased needs but also due to persistent pressure on the upgrading of the quality
of the services provided.
The level of the internal integration of the single parts of the system seems to be more important for everyday life of
a citizen. A higher level of integrated care should reinforce the quality of care and quality of life. A higher degree of integrated care can improve the efficiency of the system for clients whose complex problems enter into many systems and require numerous health care providers. Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden have the most integrated
systems of long-term care.
