Markers of oxidative and inflammatory stress of endometrium-like tissue

SUMMARY
Modulation of physiological functions of female reproductive organs is closely regulated by the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS).

Disruption of the oxidative balance accumulates oxidative stress due to insufficient antioxidant protection and / or excessive production of ROS and RNS. The imbalance between pro-oxidant molecules and antioxidants initiates abnormal metabolism of lipids, proteins but also nucleic acids and can lead to a number of reproductive diseases such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, up to infertility. Endometriosis is a benign, inflammatory disease with a high prevalence, characterized by the growth of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. The pathophysiology of endometriosis involves the initiation of a systemic inflammatory response of the endometrium, which develops over a long period of time and is accompanied by chronic pain in the peritoneum. The article presents oxidative and inflammatory molecules contributing to the development of the disease, which can be used as diagnostic markers. Understanding the principles of endometriosis progression has the potential to lead to new therapeutic approaches based on influencing the oxidative balance of the endometrium.
Key words: oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species, endometriosis, antioxidants, inflammatory mediators.
