Relationship of inflammation and oxidative stress in children with Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis

Abstract

Background. Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, the cause of which has not been fully explained yet. The role of oxidative stress in their etiopathogenesis is discussed.

Patients and methods. We enrolled 103 pediatric patients into our study: 69 children with Crohn´s disease and 34 children with ulcerative colitis. In the control group 17 healthy children were included. We determined concentration of fecal calprotectin, concentration of diamine oxidase in serum, oxidative damage to DNA, serum total antioxidant status, concentration of lipoperoxides, advanced oxidation protein products, activities of antioxidant enzymes - superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and arylesterase activity of paraoxonase.

Results. Patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease have increased oxidative DNA damage and increased catalase activity, decreased superoxide dismutase activity and decreased total serum antioxidant capacity compared to controls. Patients with Crohn‘s disease have reduced activity of glutathione peroxidase and paraoxonase compared to controls.

Conclusion. The level of oxidative stress and its effect on inflammation is different in Crohn‘s disease and ulcerative colitis (Tab. 3, Fig. 4, Ref. 38). Text in PDF www.lekarskyobzor.sk.
