Prevalence of spinal deformities and postural disorders in school children in Slovakia

Abstract

AIM: The aim of study was to evaluate the prevalence of posture disorders in young age school children, to determine what deformities of the spine dominate in young age school children and to evaluate the condition of the body segments that directly affected the posture.

METHODS: We evaluated the posture by the modified method of Napoleon Wolanski, in the school 2017 – 2020 year. The sample consisted of 1485 children aged 6 – 8. The data obtained from the examination were evaluated by MS EXCEL. To verify the hypothesis, we used base share count test. The significance level was set to 0.05.

RESULTS: We observed significant postural disorders in children. Poor posture occurs in 65.5 % of children. Spine deformities occurs in more than 63 % of monitored children. The most affected body segment were shoulders, blades and feet. We evaluated the pathological position of the shoulders (anteversion and asymmetry) in 93.6 % children. Scapula alata was diagnosed in 86.9 % children and 58.3 % children had flat feet.

CONCLUSION: As more than half of the school children under the study had posture deformities and spinal deformities, it is important to properly manage the children’s movements activities as well as sedentary behaviour. It seems necessary to implement appropriate preventives movement programs for children, which could have the potential to improve their postural state (Fig. 3, Ref. 21).
