Abstract
Introduction: The inflammatory response is accepted as an integral part of carcinogenesis. Eosinophils (Eo) are part of the tumor microenvironment as tumor-associated tissue eosinophils (TATE). Tumor Eo exhibit antitumor activity, but can also initiate processes that promote tumorigenesis. The seemingly opposite action of Eo is thought to depend on their interaction with the tumor and other cells in the microenvironment.
Patients and methods: in the pilot study we observed the relationship between numbers of circulating Eo (absolute, relative) and the incidence of distant metastases in a sample of 77 patients with histologically confirmed breast cancer. The presence of metastases was verified by PET-CT scan.
Results: Patients with metastases achieved lower mean values of relative (1.88% vs. 2.17%) and absolute Eo counts (0.13 vs. 0.15 [1 × 109 / l]). The absolute number of Eo appears to be the most promising, although its statistical significance could not be confirmed (AUC = 0.603, p = 0.159).
Conclusions: We assume that there is a relationship between the absolute number of circulating Eo and the presence of metastases in breast cancer. A significant limitation of the study is the relatively small number of enrolled patients and the retrospective nature of the study (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 45). Text in PDF www.lekarskyobzor.sk.
