Abstract
Approximately half of all deaths in Europe are due to cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerosis plays a key role in the etiopathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases.

Atherosclerosis is a generalized chronic inflammatory disease of the vascular wall. In consequence, anatomical-histological changes occur, which with functional changes lead to dysfunction of the endothelium, narrowing of the lumen of arteries and insufficient blood supply to tissues. Many risk factors are involved in the development of atherosclerosis (the main ones are arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, diabetes mellitus, stress and genetic factors). The shift in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases occuring in younger age groups is alarming. On a global scale, the incidence of CHD is already high in middle age groups. There are certain differences in the manifestations and course of CHD between men and women. The presence of microvascular changes in the myocardium is significant. The high incidence of cardiovascular diseases, especially CHD, requires early diagnosis and modern treatment. With the methods of nuclear medicine, we try to detect these changes in time, and thus prevent the occurrence of sudden coronary events.
A new type of cardio-gamma camera "Discovery CZT 530c" based on the principle of semiconductor detectors instead of a large surface scintillation detector has started to be used in nuclear cardiology. The abbreviation CZT stands for the composition of the semiconductor (Cadmium-Zinc-Tellur) (tab. 1, fig. 8, chart 4, lit. 34). Text in PDF www.lekarsky.herba.sk.
