Abstract
The oral cavity is a biologically important site and forms the gateway to the human body. It contains a very large number of bacteria that can cause various diseases of the oral cavity. The composition of the oral microbiome is already formed during intrauterine development, and subsequent colonization is triggered by childbirth. The oral microbiome changes throughout life depending on the age of the individual, the state of oral hygiene, hormonal changes, medication use or smoking. All these factors negatively or positively affect the homeostasis of the oral cavity and affect oral and overall human health (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 41). Text v PDF www.lekarskyobzor.sk.
