Use of psychoactive substances in 2013, 2016 and 2019 in Slovakia

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The use of psychoactive substances is associated with significant health risks and can lead to the development of disorders. The article analyses trends of prevalence alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking and illicit drug use between 2013 and 2019 in Slovakia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sources of the data are representative questionnaire surveys Health Awareness and Behavior of the Population of the Slovak Republic conducted in respondents older than 14 years in 2013, 2016 and 2019 (3679, 3771 and 3742 respondents, respectively).

RESULTS: Drinking of wine and beer declined during the studied period. Smoking prevalence declined after 2016 and also passive smoking occurrence declined. Prevalence of using of illicit psychoactive substances increased since 2016.

CONCLUSION: Despite of moderate decline of alcohol and tobacco consumption, their use remains a significant public health issue. Increased use of illicit substances deserves attention (Tab. 2, Fig. 5, ref. 17). Text in PDF www.lekarskyobzor.sk.
