SUMMARY
X-rays are used in trauma surgery on a daily basis, either in preoperative planning or directly in the operating room. The use of C-arm fluoroscopy in the operating room is currently an integral part of a wide range of surgical procedures. The use of radiation poses a potential biological risk to the patient, surgeon, and other employees. However, radiation doses may be higher than the members of staff might think. It is, therefore, appropriate to know and minimize these risks and optimize the irradiation. This review article aims to clarify the basic knowledge about ionizing radiation, focus on its effects on the surgeon and other stuff and define the rules of proper handling of the C-arm, proper personal protection to minimize the impact of radiation risk.

Key words: X-ray, C-arm, traumatology, radiation protection.
